Upgrading a Dual-Home Access layer
This is a disruptive upgrade that causes the 9k primary vPC switch and connected FEX to reload. The time needs to reload the FEX switches is less than when compared to the switch reload. When the servers are connected to dual-homed FEX, the normal traffic flow stays there while the new software version download to the FEX and reboot with the new version. This FEX software upgrade is automatically pushed by the primary vPC. We will explain how it happens.
- Upgrade the vPC primary switch with the new image.
- vPC secondary becomes the operation as primary (# show vpc role)
- Verify the upgrade (SW1) (SW1 - fex are down), SW2 having fex online.
- After rebooting the SW1, fex becomes active-active mismatch state.
- SW2 - shut the fex connected interfaces.
- Then fex downloading the image from SW1, and fex come online to SW1 (#show fex)
- Bring back the interface UP in SW2
- SW2 # show fex (offline active active version mismatch state - because SW2 in not upgraded yet)
- Upgrade the SW2.
